Acer Aspire One BIOS Recovery

The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

Follow every step carefully!

First format an USB stick with FAT.

Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that's important. Do not remove the USB stick.

Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking. Press the power button once. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.

The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.

If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn't reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn't still flashing the BIOS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The BIOS is now also available from Acer Japan here. It's only the BIOS file with no tools to actually flash it. Instead Acer Japan uploaded a tool to flash the BIOS from within Windows, available here. It's official so it's probably safe to use.

Acer Taiwan put the BIOS online now as well, available here.

And finally the BIOS has been uploaded to their european server. There is actually a text file included which recommends to flash the BIOS from DOS via a bootable USB stick.

this does not work for my AA1. My AA1 cant boot from the USB dongle, no activity what so ever. is there a solution to force the USB to work??

Carson said...

this one works for me
but one thing is you have to make sure your USB have boot function.
some USB dongle doesn't have that boot function.

try use other USB dongle

Got a problem where it wont boot, just shows a blank screen and no activity. I got this problem by turning various tests "on" from bios. After that it started fine to a bootloader, then i decided to restart my acer aspireone 150 to see those tests (memory, processor speed) more and then it went blank. Removed battery and waited aso. but still blank screen and no activity.

After buying a USB stick and followed specific details i got me AA1 booting again.

Thanks for an article!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

After shutting down my AA1 successfully 4 weeks ago I couldn't boot it any more. When I pressed the power button the ONLY thing that happened was that the fan turned on and the power indicator turned green. The screen was blank, no hard drive activity and the BIOS didn't even load.

After waiting for 4 weeks to have Acer warranty service pick the unit up, I got tired of waiting and found these instructions. Worked like a charm! The BIOS version I used was 3309.

You saved me from lots and lots of trouble! Thanks again!

Argo Navi said...

I followed all of these instructions (about three times) and began to think there was a hardware problem. Then I realised that the USB drive was not bootable. eventually I digged out a 160gb usb hardrive (which was bootable). and au voila; success. thanks to the guy who mentioned this before, it had me stumped.

I partitioned the drive and wanted to install dual-boot linux. I was installing PCLinux 2007 and everything went fine until it was supposed to reboot. Basically I got blank screen but it was powered because I could see a reflection from the screen and the computer was working. This is how the problem started and I could not boot any time since.
(1) I tried to take out the hard drive and put it in another computer, namely HP Compaq C300. The computer started, dual-boot linux powered up, and it looked almost as if the disk was from this driver. Therefore, I knew for sure that the computer works.
(2) I thought about installing windows again to delete the PClinux and by mistake I deleted the first partition, hidden, with the recovery. However, now the GRUB was not working and I immediately had Windows mutli-boot selection. I thought that solve the problem because I thought linux did something to the first partition. Still, when I put the drive in, now I even did not have the screen to power up.
... then I found this post
(1) I copied all the files on the external hard drive (SmartDrive) and went through the procedure). I guess the drive was FAT32 and did not start. It seem to power up for a moment and then it went dark. The power button on Acer stopped blinking and I just turned it off after 5min.
(2) I used Apitek PocketCamX with 512SD card because I did not have a stick. I went through the procedure and this time after some blinking, then going dark, the computer started!
I hope this description helps someone. Whoever posted this help guide has provided all of us with great service - there are not enough THANK YOUs that I say: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ...
... but also some credit for Acer for creating such a rescue option. Without someone programming it the whole procedure would not be possible.

WOW Fantastic! I never thought my AAO 150 ZG5 will come back alive again. Just this morning it died suddenly without warning. When I press power on, it only lit the power green light, without activity on the harddrive, I only hear the fan working but nothing on the screen, all black.

I proceeded to download the european server for 150, downloaded version 3309.

I flashed my usb stick to FAT, saved the flashit.exe and renamed 3309.fd to ZG5IA32.FD then I placed it my AAO's 2nd USB slot (right side), fn+esc, press on and release fn+esc keys and I didn't even press on again and I noticed the USB stick is blinking. After about 20 secs, a silent, then a short flash on the screen, then VOILA, I see the screen begin booting in the normal process!

Wow, this article saves me to the Acer Tech support!

You guys are the BEST. Came home tonight to do a backup of some critical work and ARRGGHH black screen, powerbutton on but nobody home. Couldn't turn it off.
Used my old lappie to google and came across this, loaded 3309 onto a flash drive, left Acer on with power cable removed and lid up to force the battery to drain, and went out for a while.
Came back, dead lappie, inserted flashdrive and followed your instructions - hurrah - its all back!
Thank you thank you thank you.
I shall be donating to your beer and pizza fund shortly! Just as soon as this backup has finished! Learnt my lesson (again ;0 )

Oldbag of Cairo said...

For the less technically minded here's what I did exactly - step by step
Mine is Aspire One with Windows XP:
1) insert USB pen into drive on a different lappie
2) download 3309.zip from the Europe (or other server)ftp://ftp.acer-euro.com/netbook/aspire_one_110/bios
3) unzip
4) move the files flashit.exe and 3309.FD to the root (eg e:/ on mine)
5) rename 3309.FD to ZG5IA32.FD
6) removed USB stick from different lappie.
7) my Aspire would not power down so I unplugged the AC and left the lid up to force the battery to drain down
8) when battery drained down, inserted USB stick into one of the USB slots (the one on the left hand side!)
9) plug in the AC
10) hold down Fn+Esc and press the power button until it comes on and starts blinking.
11) release the Fn+esc and power button which is still blinking
12) Press power button once , wait a bit and it becomes steady. (Give it 5 minutes as the man says :D )
13) When it becomes steady - have more patience - and it will with luck reboot - I think it was a good minute or so before it started rebooting for me.
14) Do the happy dance then back up your stuff!
15) donate :D

Oldbag of Cairo said...

Can you test the mains adapter or a different outlet socket in case by some freaky coincidence one or other has died at the same time?

Sonofmof said...

Thanks Cairo, I have tried it in multi outlets :-( no joy.

DemonRouge said...

Many thanks, worked fine.

Several people asked where to get flashit.exe. It's included in the bios zip-files, at least in the European site. But is it really necessary at all? If the puter doesn't boot at all, it cannot boot to DOS either to run the .exe in the first place. The only needed thing seems to be ZG5IA32.FD in the root folder of the USB-dong, and the Fn+Esc+Power buttoning to recover the BIOS.

A second thought: I flashed the newest 3309.fd, but the BIOS still calls itself v0.3114, just as before any flashing. So did any upgrade take place at all? Maybe the special start only fixed some disorder in the existing BIOS without upgrading???

Oldbag of Cairo said...

Why did this happen?

I discovered a problem with IE7 today (first time I've used it for ages as I use Firefox normally) which tracked to update KB967715 - further investigation revealed that this is the exact update that was installed just before my Aspire suffered its Black Screen of Death moment.

Would that make sense to anyone else with this problem?

It's not working for me...

At first I had the usual "power light on, blank screen".
I tried to follow this guide, but I forgot to plug in the AC, so I didn't get the flashing light. After that, whenever I press the power button it just shuts down after a few seconds. I let the laptop sit turned off while I was doing something else, and suddenly it was back to the usual "power light on, blank screen" state when I tried again.

So I put in the USB, plugged in the AC and followed the guide, but it got stuck at the flashing light. I turned it off after 30~40 min, and now it's back to shutting down after a few seconds.

Any ideas? The whole thing started after putting in 1GB of extra RAM in my AAO110.

Ivan said...

Aswad,
For the purpose of this tutorial (on flashing the B.I.O.S.), at least, you do not need to make a flash "bootable". Just (merely) format your flash drive with FAT mode. Then, enter the ftp site indicated in my first post. If you are not able to find the files in question, then, I can send them to you. Please let me know.

As for your second post, and the possible causes for the problem to happen: I was told (by the Acer authorized tech personnel) that this problem had happened because I might have forcefully turned off my Aspire 1.

Ivan.

Aswad said...

Hi Ivan,
Thanks for the update. I got the files sent by Acer Computer, GMBH and I tried the steps which they had mentioned which were similar as you have mentioned.

The Problem is everything is happening as expected like USB light blinking, Power light blinking initially and then remains constant but after waiting for the 45 minutes nothing is flashing up on the screen. I tried these steps 11-12 times but no use. I could hear the noise of the machine or probably fan from the machine but nothing is happening.

Now I think I have no option but to Post the lappiee to Acer as this option is not working.

Done everything that was said and tried above here, and I still have the same problem like Ben.

Tried different usb flash drives, I even used a WD HDD 320 external, still no use. Flashing the first few seconds and then it stops flashing on its own and just stays on (tried releasing the Fn+Esc early, and tried holding it down forever too, the power LED flashes like a couple of times and then constantly ON no matter what combination/timing I tried) ... waited and waited and nothing happened.

I am really good at following instructions especially if they are as easy as those, but that's what is worrying me now, could I be missing something here ? is there a hidden perquisite which is not spoken of ? It's really frustrating !!

Or could it be some wicked hardware version specific exception here ?

Definitely a great call on the bios flash from USB drive. I had a virus on my system and had been reinstalling it. Installed a driver for the card reader, rebooted and nothing but a black screen. OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

WORKED LIKE A CHARM IN 3 MInutes

BTW when you rename the FD file to
ZG5IA32- the character afer the 5 is the letter I capitalised not a 1 (one)

thanks again!!!!!

@ IMDA I had the same problem before this problem and it was that the fan got dirty and was not cooling the CPU enough so the computer shuts down to avoid over heating.

The solution that worked for me was to blow gently into the fan grill and also tap that area gently. Should do the trick. Hope it works for you. Definitely have a love hate relationship with this machine...

Worked perfectly on my machine - so glad I found this page.

Downloaded the latest zip from the euro server and this contained all the files needed.

Good job!

Hi,

exact same problem as everyone.
i have an A0A150 model ZG5.

first the bios was loading but before windows could load i had the fatal blue screen, tried all F8 modes (safe, last known, ) but nuthin, it always restarted back to bios.

then today, the mofo wont even load the bios. only the power button and charge light.

the solution provided is very accurate except there are 3 bios updates available from the Acer website, which one should i choose? i dont want to b messing around with BIOS.

Hi, I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to use my AA1 again or that I'd have to send it off to acer for 4 weeks, but this took me five minutes! Wonderfull, this is great and really easy to carry out. Thanks very much!

nutsnbolts76 said...

Wow, works perfect! Make sure you change the .fd file name, not the folder name and copy & paste the .fd file and the FLASHIT file to the main usb folder.

nutsnbolts76 said...

Alvin, I used 3310 and it worked great!

nutsnbolts76 said...

I tried to simplify these steps.....

The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

Follow every step carefully!

A:) First format an USB stick with FAT. (In "My Computer, right-click the usb drive and click format.)

B:) Download the latest BIOS to your USB stick: (http://us.acer.com/acer-v2/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=25&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=453&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2054404012).

C:) Open the downloaded BIOS file and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file (.fd file) in the root directory (main folder) of the stick (Copy & Paste will work). Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that's important.

1.) Connect USB drive to AA1 while turned off.

2.) Make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected.

3.) Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking.

4.) Press the power button once again. The power button will continue to blink.

I had tried this once and my acer was working fine when it suddenly turned off on me again!

I am getting frustrated as I attempted yet again by following the steps but nothing if working.

Any other suggestions that will help me before I finally go buy another one?! =\

Thodoris said...

this worked for me to a certain point, i got rid of the black screen but after the flashing my SSD drive is non-existant.

Note that the black screen came about while i was installing an OS on the netbook.

any ideas anyone?

marc.dal said...

I just bought a totally new Acer Aspire One 150, and it started like this, it wouldn't boot and just showed a black screen. I've never had it turned on. I tried following these steps very carefully, but it seems like the Acer won't interact with my usb; the power button starts flashing, but it just turns off like normally after a minute or so. The usb's light doesn't blink either.

Any ideas on why this happens?

marc.dal said...

I've tried both a Kingston 1gb and a 2gb usb thumb.

marc.dal said...

Update: Now it'll just blink for ages, last time it went up to 30 mins but then I turned it off 'cause I thought something had to be wrong.

Please, I need help fast or I'll have to send it in :(

Legless said...

STAR. Works like a bought one again. Wonder what the root cause is though, seems any sort of OS upgrade can cause the BIOS to go west.

alco said...

It worked like a charm from an usb floppy drive, renamed bios file, without flashit.exe, thanks for excellent solution !!!!

Liz said...

OMG! It acutally worked! Thank you to OldBag and nutsnbolts76 for breaking it down for us!

Gosh, Marc.dal, not sure what the problem might be. I've seen in other posts that people had problems if they tried to use a USB that was not formatted in FAT.

This is what I did. Be sure and back up any files that are on your USB before trying the below. I copied old USB stick files to a new spot, deleted everything off of the USB stick, and then formatted.

To format the USB stick,
1. Insert USB stick into USB slot
2. Go to Start -> Computer -> Right click the USB stick's name on the far left (for instance, I have UDISK 2.0 (F:))
3. A menu should appear. Choose format...
4. Under file system, make sure that it says FAT from the drop down menu
5. Hit start

Also, after formatting the USB stick, make sure that you only copy over the two files flashit.exe and 3309.FD to the USB stick. Be sure to rename 3309.FD to ZG5IA32.FD (note that the middle character is a capital "i")

Hope this helps!

It just happened to me again and the solution worked again like a charm, except this time I didn't wait for the battery to drain down, I just pulled it out and put it back in again.

Once more, it seems to be associated with an Internet Explorer update which I did yesterday and this somehow seems to make it fail to go in to hibernation mode satisfactorily, so when I went to bed last night, it had the lid closed but did not hibernate. Hence I guess it overheated.

Joni said...

Wow Just like that!!! I didnt expect this to be so simple and fast!

I love you! I was on my knees when my AAO 150 decided not to turn on. I've had the thing apart, reset the CMOS from battery (which incidentally did nothing) and was trying to think up some form of insurance scam to pull to get it replaced (I smashed the LCD already so it's OOW). Not that I would have actually scammed any insurance company, of course !!

How much beer/wine/spirits do you want, and where do they go?

Thanks again. Invaluable!

Hello , I thought this would work after reading all the comments , however although my AcerAspire1 does boot up and shows the Acer boot up screen for a few seconds , it then just goes to a blank screen . I can see the cursor and move it around but nothing else. Could this be a hard drive issue ? Any inputs appreciated.

Worked like a charm, THANKS!!!

One more happy user here! But, had to try two different USB-sticks. On the second stick I took a chance and did not place flashit.exe on stick and there where some other files on the stick too. Still worked fine!

THIS WORKS! Thank you so much!

Is it important to make the usb bootable ? or just palin FAT format and put 2 files on it and go through the procedure. I think I"m trying 5th time and no luck maybe should try the different USB stick?

Clive said...

I have an Aspire 5100, that will not boot up. Can I use the same procedure as you did with aspire ONE. Would I have to rename the down loaded bios to a dfferent name. (using the 5100 bios of course)

Any advice will help. Please and thank you

Thanks soooooo much, I have tried so many other instructions to fix this problem but none of them mentioned renaming the fd file, after doing this for my AOA 150 it worked straight away! Fan bl00dy tastic! Shame the official Acer site has hardly any instructions per model on upgrading and repairing the bios.

My Acer Aspire One got to the none booting state after I hooked it up to my plasma and set the res and hertz really high, after disconnecting it just wouldn't boot. After doing the above works again.

Saved my life! Ta!

Just done it! Many thanks, mate.
I did not use FLASHIT.EXE as some suggested by some. Only copied file 3309.fd then renamed into ZG5IA32.fd. Put the file into root directory of my usb then plugged into the AA1. Then pressed Fn+Esc+Power...waited a minute or two....my netbook is now back! Thank you very much!

Thanks sooo much! Daughter will be very happy...I didn't want to have to swap hard drives with a Acer exchange. She had lots of family images.

I cleared the 1GB USB Cruser, these drives are loaded with programs so just checked to see if it was a fat based drive it was so I did not format it, then went to Acer and downloaded the A0A150 Bios update. Then Unzipped it. took the unzipped folder and added it to the cruzer drive, and took the 3310.fd and the Flashit files and copied to the usb drive root (out of the folder) and then renamed the 3310.fd to ZG5IA32.FD and left the Flashit file alone. Waited with a little stress of wondering if it might not work as the steps above mentioned but it booted from the disk and after a short while 2-4 Minutes or less it turned my Black Screen into a recovered system. XP Home Running Fine. Daughter gets another Christmas. I am a dislexic thinker so If I can do it, you can do it!!! Huge thanks from Roseville California near Sacramento CA. I'm not a perfect writer and will not proof-read but top of page instructions work!

My Acer aspire One was working fine last night, but when i went to turn it on this morning nothing happened.

No LED's turned on, no fans rotated, and no light came from the screen.

Im not sure if this guide can cure a problem like mine, as im not sure if its an internal problem.

Anyone else got a problem like mine, and fixed their Acer with this guide?
